Feel Good Friday: Our Eight Senses

Good morning, friends. It's Friday! We made it. :) What's the plan for the weekend? If you read today's blog headline and thought, "Huh? Eight? We only have five senses!", then you were like me just a week ago before I learned we have three more.Yup, it's true.Beyond these five senses:- Vision- Auditory- Smell- Taste- Touch...There are these three:- Vestibular System- Proprioceptive System- Interoception SystemI was totally surprised to learn about these three senses and how they were a part of my day-to-day life. Here's a little more background on the Vestibular, Proprioceptive and Interoception Systems.Vestibular:This one's all about our balance and orientation in space—in short, our head relative to gravity.I really will have to think about this one more in yoga classes because I can see that being a huge sensation in those sessions.Proprioceptive:This sense has to do with the position, location, orientation, and movement of the body muscles and joints. When we stretch or ache or feel muscle tightness—that's our proprioceptive system working. It's the effort we use to move body parts. Think about running, dancing, and swimming and all it takes to make those large movements.Interoception:This is often the most neglected sense of all, but once you understand it, it'll seem like a more important one. It's centered around the physical condition of the body and the senses our internal organs are feeling, like hunger and thirst. When we feel our stomach cramp or throat get scratchy for water, that's our interoception system saying, "Hey, I need something. Can you help?"This was all really fascinating for me to learn in LA Yoga Magazine. That's what I love about reading and just sitting around some nights to absorb new information. It's crazy that no matter how old we get, there's always room to learn. I don't think I'll ever want to stop. I'm a student of life! (<-- so corny)Anyway, just thought I'd share this info today.Hope you have a great weekend.See you Monday!Ari
